Maroons Are ODAC Champs!
Busik Scores Twice in 3-1 Win Over #8 Lynchburg College

LYNCHBURG, VA--The Roanoke College field hockey team won its first ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship with a 3-1 win over eighth-ranked Lynchburg College on Saturday in Lynchburg, VA. With the win, the Maroons receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, the team’s first ever trip to thee national postseason. The Maroons improve to 14-5 overall on the season with the victory, while Lynchburg, the defending ODAC champs, fell to 17-3 on the season. Roanoke junior Kelley Busik (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s), after scoring the team’s winning goal in Friday’s win over Eastern Mennonite, scored two goals in the championship contest on Saturday. Busik scored the first goal of the game, an unassisted goal with 26:53 left in the first half. The Maroons would take that one-goal advantage into halftime and pushed it out to two goals with 26:10 remaining in the game. Busik struck again, this time putting in a rebound of a Nicole Yodice (Branchville, NJ/High Point Regional) shot. The Hornets cut the lead in half with 17:41 to play in regulation. The Maroons repelled a Lynchburg surge following the goal and with 8:49 to go in the contest added an insurance goal, a score from freshman Kelly Lyons (White River Junction, VT/Hartford).
Beth Lichty (Denver, CO/St. Mary’s), who on Friday stopped two Eastern Mennonite penalty strokes, made three saves in a reserve role on Saturday, earning a spot on the All-Tournament team. She was joined by Busik, Yodice, and senior Nikki Whitmore (Reston, VA/Herndon) on the All-Tournament team.
Knowing they will play next week, the Maroons await Sunday’s announcement of where, when, and who they will play. The NCAA selection committee will make the announcement Sunday evening.
