Four Maroons Named to All-State Team
Bayse Named State Coach of the Year
SALEM, VA--Four Roanoke College softball players were named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State softball team the organization announced Thursday afternoon. In addition to the players’ selection, head coach Alan Bayse was named the Virginia College Division Coach of the Year. Erin Smith (Vinton, VA/William Byrd), Amy Zachary (Richmond, VA/Moncan), and Crystal Berry (Timberville, VA/Broadway) were all named to the First Team, while Crystal Hileman (St. Paul, VA/St. Paul) was named to the Honorable Mention team. Smith completed the season with a 15-2 overall record and set a school record for lowest earned run average, allowing just 0.53 earned runs a game this season. Zachary finished the season with a .397 batting average, 47 runs scored, and 26 RBIs, while Berry scored a team-high 53 runs and set a school record with 27 stolen bases. Hileman hit a team-high seven homers and finished her career with an ODAC record 26.
Bayse was named the state Coach of the Year after leading the Maroons to a 38-5 overall record, the team’s fourth consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship and its fourth straight trip to the NCAA tournament. Bayse was also named the ODAC’s Coach of the Year, the fifth year in a row that he has collected that award.
