Maroons Beat #20 Mary Washington
RC Scores Four Times in First Half, Improves to 6-1 in 2001
FREDERICKSBURG, VA--A four-goal first half propelled the Roanoke College men's soccer team to a 4-2 win over Mary Washington College, the nation's 20th ranked Division III program. The Maroons improve to 6-1 on the season and pick up their second consecutive win over the Eagles. Mary Washington, who was also ranked second in the South Region, falls to 6-1 on the year. Roanoke's David Lechtrecker (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron), who has four goals in the past two matches, got things rolling for the Maroons, scoring 5:15 into the contest. Sophomore Keith McGovern (Philadelphia, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) assisted on the play. Junior Harold McConnell (Sussex, NJ/High Point Regional) gave RC a 2-0 advantage just under two minutes later, an unassisted tally.
At the 15:13 mark, the Eagles cut the lead in half, but that didn't last too long, as Roanoke's Regi Francois (Springfield, VA/Washington International) scored in the 24th minute. Things slowed down until the final two minutes of the half. The Eagles again cut the Roanoke lead to just one (3-2) with a goal with 1:26 to play in the opening stanza. That score would last for a grand total of 26 seconds. With exactly a minute to go, Dave Matthews (Greensboro, NC/Shenandohowa) capped the game's scoring, giving Roanoke the 4-2 lead.
In addition to the goals, the Maroons also got assists from Brandan Moffett (Laurel, MD/Laurel) and Neil Bourdelaise (Gambrills, MD/Severn).
Roanoke travels to Hampden-Sydney, VA on Wednesday to play the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College. The game, which was originally scheduled for a Tuesday start, will begin at 4:00pm.
