Roanoke Ends Three-Game Slide
Weeren, Davis, and Daddio Score Four Times, Cooper Stops 12
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA--The Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team brought an end to its three-game losing streak with a convincing 17-5 win at Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improve to 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while Virginia Wesleyan drops to 5-6. The win is Roanoke’s second in a row over the Marlins. The Maroons now own an 11-2 lead in the all-time series. Roanoke’s Kris Davis (Parkton, MD/Hereford) opened the game’s scoring with a tally just about four minutes in. The Marlins would get the next two goals before Joe Weeren (Winchester, MA/Winchester) made the score 2-2 heading into the second period. The hosts took a 3-2 lead three minutes into the third, but after that, the game was controlled by the Maroons. Roanoke scored the next five goals, three coming from Weeren, in the second period and led 7-4 at the intermission.
The third period was completely dominated by the Maroons, as they outscored VWC 5-0 to take a 12-4 advantage after 45 minutes of play. Bryan Daddio (Syosett, NY/Syosett) had two of the five goals in the third period, with Davis getting one of his four in the game. The fourth was much like the third, with the Maroons controlling the tempo. The Maroons outscored the Marlins 5-1 over the final 15 minutes to walk away with the 17-5 decision. Roanoke’s final goal of the game was scored by defenseman Adam Lulay (Mt. Lakes, NJ/Mt. Lakes), his first career goal.
The Maroons looked to freshman John Cooper (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) in the goal and the freshman produced 12 saves in 45 minutes of action. Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor) played the final quarter and making three saves. Daddio, Davis, and Weeren all finished the game with four goals, while freshman Adam Leahy (Cohassett, MA/Willison Northampton) scored his first career college goal.
The Maroons end their regular season with four consecutive homes games, a stretch that begins with Guilford College this coming Wednesday. The Maroons and Quakers will face-off at 4:00pm on Roanoke’s Alumni Field. The next three games will be broadcast on the radio on WWWR 910-AM in Roanoke.
