Maroons Drop Third Straight

Davis Scores Twice as Maroons Falter Late

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team suffered its third consecutive loss, falling at #9 Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons fall to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while HSC improves to 7-1 overall, 1-0 in league play. The Tigers have now won four of the past five meeting with Roanoke.

Despite several quality scoring opportunities in the first four minutes of the game, the Maroons failed to score in the first period and found themselves behing 2-0 heading into the second. Colin Burke (Rancho Sante Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) broke the scoring drought for the Maroons early in the second, scoring a man-up goal off a feed from Steve LoVecchio (Montclair, NJ/Montclair). The Tigers came back with two straight goals to take a three-goal lead (4-1), before Kris Davis (Parkton, MD/Hereford) scored consecutive tallies for the Maroons. HSC would add one more score in the second to take a 5-3 lead at the break.

The Maroons got the first two scores of the third period, one by Joe Weeren (Winchester, VA/Winchester) and the other from Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington), to tie the score at five. Bonasera’s goal came with 6:46 to play in the thiurd period. From there, it was all Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers held Roanoke to just one goal over the final 21:46 of the game and got eight of their own in that span to take the victory.

Hampden-Sydney’s Jeremy Bull made 18 saves in goal, keeping the Maroons at bay for much of the contest. Roanoke’s tim Morse finished with 11.

Roanoke takes on Virginia Wesleyan College on the road next Saturday afternoon in another ODAC contest that begins at 1:00pm.
